Many mother practise food beliefs such as Having Ginger, Sesame Oil, Wine, Red Dates and prohibitions during the confinement period. Known as the “pantang” period which lasts for 30-40 days, depending on different races, mothers are expected to follow a strict diet during this time. Certain foods are not eaten for fear of it being too “windy”, “cooling” or causing itchiness. You would have been told to take all kinds of herbs in your diet to strengthen your body or to “regulate your body system”. Though many such diets are quite harmless, it is necessary to ensure that you do not omit large amounts of any of the 3 main food groups.
